Bourbon and Bon Vivants

and other stuff your Daddy should have taught you....

a wee bourbon-fest

Friday, March 31, 2006

had some friends over for a drink after work
we broke out the Elmer T. Lee
and had ourselves a little bourbon tastin'

i love the different reviews about the same whisky..

From the Master Distiller Meritus
Nose: Rich malt and rye with kumquats, mint and a hint of juniper
Taste: Sweet honey and raisin flavours complemented with cocoa, vanilla and toasted oak
Finish: Extremely long and dry with returning flavors of juniper and cocoa

From Wine Enthusiast: rating 91
Medium gold in color;
Nose: brings notes of butterscotch, clover, vanilla, and old leather.
Palate: The big body bears a palate with an almost wine-like character that balances intense fruits, honey, and vanilla with a light spiciness that shows off the distiller's craft.
Finish: long and warm.

Whisky Magazine - 8.5 out of 10
Nose: Sliced toasted almonds.
Palate: Butterscotch pie. A hint of sweet lemons.
Finish: Gently balancing dryness.
Comment: Delicious. Dangerously drinkable. Bigger and richer than I remember.

Whisky Magazine - 7.25 out of 10
Nose: Sappy, pine resin. Almost sandy notes. Quite delicate and lightly honeyed along with basil leaf and toffee. Light.
Palate: Scented with an almost waxy feel. Oak is firm but there's some finesse. Very precise.
Finish: Becoming oaky. (ed. note: as opposed to okay)
Comment: Good, but just leaves you wanting a bit more.

leathery kumquats? pine-sol flavoured butterscotch?
egad.

sooooo good to see mrs. r in dc
she looks fabulous
handsome hubby
adorable offspring
questionable driving skills

meh

georgia browns will not win any accolades from me
but i was there for the company
and THAT, my friends
was impeccable

the gossip was gentle
and the giggles were genuine

then we were off to bourbon and its 60+ whisky list
the fellow behind the bar might as well have been selling hamburgers
(you want fries with that?)
my review won't be kind
but it's nice to know it's there
