Monday, January 30, 2006

my birthday surprise was a day at the spa
started at 9am
finished at 5pm

my skin is glowing
(those facials HURT)
and i've been rubbed with
salt
sugar
leaves
petals
rocks
oil
and hot towels

prrrrrrrrrrr

and AYCE fried chicken at george's diner in meredith
just to make sure my face was still glowing

Da Vinci Code
conspiracy

Shalimar the Clown

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie

so what if it takes you a month to read
or six
or that it is 800 pages
compressed into 400
by tiny type
and wee margins

read it.
read it slowly.
savor it.
like a fabulous bottle of wine
that you opened on a tuesday
just because.

for want of a coolatta..

Monday, January 16, 2006

i've been craving a coolatta for about a week.
but i've been strong.
no coolatta with it's 40g of sugar
and other fang of satan evils.

but today...oh today
alas.
i tried.
my car doors were frozen shut.
the weather stripping ripped off
when i finally got the door open.
whoops.

drove to dunks
but my window was frozen shut
so i couldn't go through the drive-thru

went inside ordered a decaf/splenda blended
what i got was a hot decaf poured over some ice
and shaken (not stirred)

sigh.

i took one sip
walked through the door
spilled a couple of drops on my pants
and while i was looking down at my pants
the door swung back and knocked the whole bloody cup
out of my hand
and onto on the floor

alas, poor shaken decaf/splenda
i knew you, not very well

Great Tales from English History (Book 2) by Robert Lacey

Great Tales from English History (Book 2) : Joan of Arc, the Princes in the Tower, Bloody Mary, Oliver Cromwell, Sir Isaac Newton, and More by Robert Lacey

hmmm.
perhaps i should have started with book 1?

it had a nice beat
but i couldn't dance to it.

Vanity Fair

Wednesday, January 11, 2006

fine. i forgot about Vanity Fair.

i also didn't mention the weekly Standard,
Harper's,
Rolling Stone,
or Dwell

alas.
don't even get me started on the catalogs.

oy.

25+ magazine subscriptions

Tuesday, January 10, 2006

i subscribe to about 29 magazines
(have i mentioned my reading habit)

and i have to say,
i still look forward to Sports Illustrated every thursday.
i hate reading the Economist, but feel compelled
really like The Week
think Newsweek is better than Time; and that's not saying much
enjoy Cargo, strangely enough (all those fashion tips)
Esquire is a must
Maxim can be funny, but i'll never admit to it
Forbes is blah
BusinessWeek is interesting
USNews & World Report is boring, but important
Golf for Women makes me want to swing & wear plaid
Curve, well, let's just say i really like Curve and leave it at that
Out and the Advocate are written to exclude women
People and Entertainment Weekly are guilty pleasures
Star is just bad. very bad. i should be punished.
Saveur is delicious
Gourmet and Food & Wine are Gina's, as she cooks. i merely benefit.
Utne Reader has great ads, but some of the articles are shrill

of course there are others,
Consumer Reports
Natural Health
Real Simple (Cargo for women, basically)
WoodWorking magazines, again....gina's...i'd put my eye out
DIY magazines (ReadyMade, DIY)

and lest we forget my two very favourites:

Mental Floss
and

Bookmarks

whew.

wearing underwear sideways

Monday, January 09, 2006

noticed in the bathroom that
something wasn't quite right.

i'm wearing my underwear sideways.
it's a thong.

oh, don't tell me you haven't done the same thing.
like maybe that one time in college...
when you were *experimenting*

the question remains:
whether to remove my blue velvet pants in the stall
and correct the underwear situation
or carry on as though nothing were amiss.

frankly, i'd rather not take my pants off in the bathroom stall at work.
(so many parts of that sentence are true)
...not at work
...not in the bathroom stall

and if i didn't notice that my underwear
was sideways
when i put it on at 6am
(sideways!)
how bad could it really be?

lost keys

Saturday, January 07, 2006

well, today we lost the keys
to the truck (again)
while walking the pups
on the mountain

it's the second set of keys
the mountain has claimed

thankfully, i still have all my
fingers and toes

including that extra index finger
i picked up in college

Saturday by Ian McEwan

Friday, January 06, 2006

another top 10 book of 2005
and another book i just couldn't get through.
i tried.
really.
twice.
once this summer.
once this week.
nada.
nothing.

julia tried as well
and she didn't get past page 7
(and she only read that far because i insisted)

toilet theft

Thursday, January 05, 2006

read a wee article the other day
in the paper about the apparent theft
of several toilets up in maine

the maine state troopers are looking into it

thank goodness.
i'd hate to think toilet theft would be left to amateurs

On Beauty by Zadie Smith

bulgaria..the new china

Tuesday, January 03, 2006

today's pants were made in bulgaria.

bulgaria?

somewhere (probably bulgaria)

without their mothers
who gave their lives
to make 29% of my pants

read: 1776 by David McCullough

it won the pulitzer
i didn't love it.
