Bourbon and Bon Vivants

and other stuff your Daddy should have taught you....

wedding scooter

Thursday, April 28, 2005

i want a Honda Metropolitan scooter.
is it wrong to put a scooter
on the wedding registry?

discuss.

it's not like i actually need anything...
and renee already took the
*better person than me* award
by asking all her wedding gifts be made
as donations to a favourite charity...

my dog ate my kong

um. aren't kong's supposed to be
virtually indestructible?
i found the long lost kong today
while i was updating my 2005 budget
(naturally)

gave said kong to jolie
who managed to get the treat out
in less than 4 minutes
ripping the entire top off the kong
in the process.

atta girl.

LOST..the translation

Wednesday, April 27, 2005

oooo...i love the season review.
and the narrator is sassy.
he sounds like the voice over for the keebler elves.

so really, who needs 14 episodes to tell a story
when you can just recap the entire season

even if I do the math
i know it's better to do the 14 episodes.

television is just a venue to make money
consider, 8-12 minutes of ads per show
multiplied by entire season

home at last...home at last

Tuesday, April 26, 2005

took the red-eye from the west coast
sat next to a businessman in an overcrowded flight.
he got up every hour to go to the bathroom.
EVERY HOUR.

read Mary Roach's extremely funny book
Stiff: Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
which at one point talked about the best
way to survive a plane crash is
to be male

because men have the brute strength
to push everyone else out of way
combined with the survival of the fittest instinct

seems reasonable...except..

in an article in this week's Time (may 2, 2005)
(um, hello..this week is still april, but that's another topic)
"What the science of evacuation reveals about how humans
behave in the worst of times"

basically, it says that most people simply don't react at all
in the face of "clear & urgent danger."
we freeze.
some in disbelief.
some waiting to be told what to do.
some just shut down.

and interesting, women are "quicker to evacuate than men"
(ok sweetie, the plane is on fire, you probably should force open the door and get out)

sushi, sushi, and sushi

Monday, April 25, 2005

mmmmmmmm...sushi
every day.

oh, and i tried on motorcycle leathers.
(after i sat on a few scooters..pttt...pttt...pttt)

remind me to tell you of the preview of
"the L word" on Friday night.
sitting at the bar sunday afternoon
and almost getting into a bar fight
over a game of pool that i wasn't even playing.
YIKEs.

dog walk, part 2

Wednesday, April 20, 2005

today toemas got the
let's-see-how-the-knee-holds-up
with a bigger dog
walk

he was much better behaved than jolie
although he did want a piece of the
red/golden that wandered by

and later, after he rubbed his neck
in something foul.
i gave him a bath.

mmm...all squeaky clean
and adorable.

dog walk

Tuesday, April 19, 2005

today i decided to test the knee
with a dog walk down to rite-aid
(it's up and down hills and i wasn't
sure the knee would hold up
with a 38lb pointer pulling on me)

because stupid rite-aid gave me the
WRONG SCRIPT

i'd gone to have a script refilled.
and when i got home
instead of little white pills
there were little orange pills
so i read the label
(probably should have done that first)
when lo and behold
this was not the script i'd submitted.
it had my name and address
and my doc's info
but the script was NOT what the doc wrote out

whoops

so i called them and they apologized
and asked me to return the pills and they would
correct the script.
um. yeah.

oh marathon, oh marathon

Monday, April 18, 2005

i was supposed to be in boston
watching the marathon live
and in person
as i've always done

had even volunteered to work it again
but never got an answer back from the bastards..

anyhoo.
apparently everyone else was either,

1. running the marathon
2. working at the marathon
3. working..like at a real job
4. planting trees in nepal

so i stayed home and watched it on tv.
interesting, but not the same.

it was hot for me, ie, WAY TOO hot for the runners
but kudos to those who completed the marathon
i'm so proud!

marathon of life

happy anniversary jbb & jk.
wow.
one year ago.
i was going to wear my t-shirt to the brunch.

pecan pie was the order of the day.
now if we could just find some fried okra.

Lui Collins - live and in person

Saturday, April 16, 2005

friends had a pot luck / concert
at their ski lodge.
yes, they own a ski lodge.
and the mountain it belongs to.
not the whole mountain, mind you
but the 6 runs, and the spring at the bottom.

and folk-singer Lui Collins was there
for entertainment.
it was a private concert.
how freakin' cool.

the whole thing was great
albeit, surreal with the living room
in front of the fireplace
being turned into a sound stage.

it was like a very intimate club.
well, except for the children sitting on cushions in front of me
and, well, it was in the living room.

the tax man cometh..

Friday, April 15, 2005

unless you, like me, filed about 3 months ago.

Sheffield scuffle with Boston Fan

Thursday, April 14, 2005

now let me get this straight...

fans try and reach for the ball
in the 8th inning of the red sox vs yankees game
this guy made contact with sheffield
as he was going for the ball
but nothing in the replay makes it look like
he was taking a swing at sheffield
and the contact made appears slight, if at all

but somehow mike lynch at channel 5
said of COURSE sheffield should have gone after the fan
what?
and obviously the fan was trying to clock sheffield
with an upper cut
and spewing profanity at him.
interesting.

what replay was lynch watching?

if you don't want the fans to be that close
to the athletes
then put up screen barriers
or tell the players to not chase the balls
when they get close to the fans
or better yet...bar fans from the games
and we'll just watch games on tv

but do not tell me that any overpriced,
overblown, steroid taking, testosterone pumping
role model, er, athlete has the *right*
to go up in the stands after a fan
or that we should all be so proud
because a ballplayer didn't kill a fan
who interfered with play
or touched him during the course of the game.

marianne faithful and french films

who will take my dreams away

marianne faithful sings this in the film
La Fille sur le pont, (1999) aka "The Girl On the Bridge"
don't bother looking for the soundtrack
there isn't one
the director just took songs he liked and put them in the film

yeah, just like the mixed tape you made in jr. high
only better
and distributed internationally

LOST was a repeat...so now what

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

i need to plant the strawberry plants.
then again, i need to get a job.

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

i've got knitting needles,
practice yarn,
wine,
snacks,

you bring:
knitting needles (if you got 'em)
yarn (if you know what you are doing)
gossip,
and the title/author of your very favourite
trashy beach read summer novel

and perhaps the last really, really great book you read..
one you just hated to finish
because it was so good.

i promise to have everyone home
at a reasonable hour.

retro coffee table

Monday, April 11, 2005

so the coffee table is lookin' fly.
i put the legs on.
12 inch black pipe
connected to flange.

and spent about 3 hours
discussing what colour to paint it
before going with the 60's retro
polka dot look.

i see us selling this baby on ebay.
is $5k too much?

a beautiful day in the neighborhood....

Sunday, April 10, 2005

it's 70 degrees outside.
i'm planting the strawberry plants.
and there is NO stopping me.

well, except for that snow advisory for tuesday.

nuts.

won't you be my neighbor

Saturday, April 09, 2005

so last fall...when the leaves fell
and we filled about 438 bags
of lawn refuse....

well, who knew that those leaves
reproduced under the snow?
how else do you explain another
14 bags of leaves and such?

did i mention we went to the dump
more than once today?
and went to the hardware store
more than twice.

ann meyers loves betty ford...4-ever

Sunday, April 03, 2005

when did ann meyers form an alliance
with the betty ford school of matronly suits?
did you see the blue jacket?
and that pam shriver post navratilova hair?
YIKES

and who has a coach name *pokey*

my friend marsha went to baylor.
and got the *lesbianisn is a sin* speech
from the president of the college
along with the rest of the softball team.

um. hmm. you KNOW that's right.

so i must root for baylor in this ncaa women's final four.
